Famous for being the restaurant where C4’s First Dates is filmed.. famous for it’s view of St Paul’s, and famous for its steak. I’m not on a first date, i have a similar view from my office and I don’t eat steak! What am I doing there then you might ask?! I went to celebrate pancake day and see if a veggie can also give Paternoster Chop House the high ratings that carnivores give!
First of all let’s discuss this view- umm.. wow! Beautiful! You can have a drink al fresco and be dwarfed by the beautiful St Pauls. Even if you are on the worst date ever- you will be able to agree on the view!
I felt kind of special walking into Paternoster Chop House.. I was waiting for the cameras to film me and meet the famous Maitre D! Unfortunately it isn’t the charming French man we see on TV but the lady greeting me on arrival was equally lovely, charming and friendly!
The waiters are also not the ones we see on the show- but luckily my date did show up and I didn’t need a waiter to be my knight in shining armour!
We ordered a pancake and being a fussy cheese eater swapped the goats cheese for some boring cheddar! (Im allergic to goats cheese and hate Stilton!)
The pancake was nice enough but needed some kind of reduction with it because it was mainly a lot of spinach. It was still nice though! I washed this down with a delicious glass of Merlot. We saw some veggie sides being passed round- including baked potato which looked quite delicious. We had the triple cooked chips- I found them a bit greasy.
Dessert was delicious mmmmm.. A apple quince & cinnamon pancake with a scoop of ice cream (we had ginger ice cream instead). This was the most delicious pancake I’ve ever eaten. The apple quince and cinnamon was flavoured perfectly and the ginger ice cream was really good!
I did have to tell the manager that on this occasion the service was really slow- it was so hard to get a waiters attention despite the restaurant not being full. The manager was apologetic and really quite lovely. This brings my rating to 4 stars. Even though there is little veggie choice- whatever they have, tastes fabulous. I knocked off a point for the service, but my complaint was dealt with very well. I would come here again if they have another special menu that has veggie dishes!
The restaurant has a great ambiance, it feels intimate without being too small.. There was a great buzz of energy at the bar but it was not loud and irritating for diners. It’s a perfect place for a date, occasion or even a client meeting. In the summer I’d request a table outside so you can enjoy the views.
Do you avoid steak restaurants of you are a vegetarian? Or do you still just go along anyway?
