If you’ve been reading my reviews around Asia then you’ll know that I suffered a little with the food. So when I found Mamma Shop in Siem Reap I could’ve wept from joy! Don’t get me wrong- I had a great time trying local treats but a lot of food didn’t agree with me so I just craved a good meal which included a proper Italian pasta.
You can find this place Just behind Pub Street and the famous Old Market and Arts & Craft market in the town centre.
Mamma shop is owned and run by Simone who is a wonderful true Italian gentleman who now lives in Siem Reap. Simone runs this restaurant to earn enough money to live off- but all his spare time goes to bettering the lives of the less fortunate children in Siem Reap. Simone takes the time to talk to all of his guests and it was only after I started asking heaps of questions did i then realise how much he does for the community out there- he is really very modest! I loved listening to his stories about food, Bologna, and Siem Reap.
It’s a small intimate restaurant, they have tables with glass covers and inside is different types of dried pasta. The decor is simple and tasteful and I guess a capacity of around 30 seated guests…
And the food is just amazing- I went there twice! On my first visit I could decide if I wanted to pesto fettucine or the spinach and tomato ravioli- so Simone gave me a half portion of both! The ravioli is so good, i returned for the full portion the next day! The pizzas are great (pizzas are made and taste very different in locally run restaurants)… The wine was great! The ice cubes for water and juices is made from mineral water so you are safe! And salad etc is also washed in mineral water.
Oh and all the pasta & bread is homemade. Everything is homemade and just AMAZING! This restaurant would also get 5* from me in Italy as well.
This restaurant is highly listed on Trip Advisor so make sure you book. But we did turn up the next day without a reservation and Simone quickly helped us out.
If you like Italian food, and need a break from the local cuisine Mamma Shop is the answer to your prayers!
I’d love to hear from you.. Do you get tired of the local cuisine when travelling?
