I stayed at one of these beautiful cottages as a surprise weekend getaway. This place is truly unique, and only 1.5 hour drive from London. The Walnuts was originally built in 1724, and by 1860 the front part of the house was used as the local village store for about 100 years. Steve and Dianne run the cottages, and the service is truly fantastic- they have designed the accommodation in line with its beautiful history!
The main house is a Grade II listed building and has many of the original features, here you will find 3 properties:
- The Old Stores- which was originally the village store
- Bread Oven Cottage- which was the village bakehouse
- Inglehooks- a ground floor apartment with many original features.
A few doors down is Walnut View Cottage and the studio apartment Cabin.
Depending in which cottage you choose, you may have a large 4 poster bed, or a king size bed, private hot tubs, roll top baths, your own secluded and well kept garden. All have towels, free wifi, fluffy white robes self catering facilities and exceptional service! The cottages are so cosy and well kept.
Dianne and Steve will also make a celebration more special- if its a birthday you can have balloons and banners (no extra cost!). I also asked for a package that included champagne & chocolates. You can have massages & treatments too- just give them a call and talk it through- they are so flexible! I had asked them to get all the birthday presents I had hidden in a cupboard and lay them out near the fireplace with champagne etc. It was honestly amazing, and my boyfriend was so surprised!!
There is a forest nearby, there is also a lake where you can go fishing, we went to The Bull Inn for brunch on the first day, we had a fancy dinner at Tuddenham Mills in the evening- I didn’t know this before, but it’s a footballer spotting restaurant! We took a taxi there and back so we could enjoy some drinks too- it was only about £15 each way.
There are loads of good places to eat there, The Merry Monk, The Walnut Tree, and many others. Dianne & Steve are full of recommendations- and you can always enjoy a night in and cook together. I am definitely doing that next time I am there!
We visited Cambridge the next day, and also went to Ely.. and Ickworth House in Bury St Edmunds. You can even visit Newmarket, maybe go see the horses… I can go on about a whole list of activities to keep you busy.. but my favourite part of it all was the seclusion and spending my day drinking champagne and eating chocolates in a private hot tub!
This is the perfect place to just get away for the weekend without having to travel for hours- Dianne & Steve can help to make it that bit more special- ideal if a lady wans to propose this leap year! It is so beautiful here, and so welcoming.. and so close to London! I hope enjoy it as much as I did!
