Part of this blog is to ‘try something new everyday’ and whilst I’m the person that likes most things- whisky is something I’m not a fan of! So obviously it makes total sense to go for an evening of whisky tasting!
It was a free activity, proving my point that fun nights in London don’t have to be expensive!
So we went to Balls brothers bar on St Mary Axe. There was a long high rise table seating about 20 people. There were the main teacher and his assistant as well.
The first thing I’ll say is that we immediately got into a conversation with the others around the table. This wasn’t any credit for the teachers- but more about the fact that there was a friendly bunch in the group!
Is Jack Daniels a whisky or a bourbon was the debate.. I assumed whisky but don’t really know why (and didn’t really care either!) Whereas others argued JD is in fact a Bourbon.
When the class started this actually was the first thing the teacher asked the group- unaware that this debate had already started. Anyway JD is in fact a whisky! Woohoo I was correct! Something to do with the way each drop goes through the charcoal of sugar maple syrup and is then aged in charred oak barrels.
So we started by trying the class JD no.7… We also tried out some more expensive bottles and we shared our thoughts on each- with smell, taste, colour etc.
After a few of these drinks I felt truly rock ‘n’ roll and started knocking back whatever was left in my glass in time for the next drink…
The teacher was very knowledgable, its just a shame we couldn’t hear him over the noise in the rest of the bar. In fact for the group on the other end of the table- I’m sure they just got on with the drinking because they couldn’t hear a thing!
After trying 6 or 7 drinks the class was over… As a non whisky lover I still had a good time and still hadnt spent a penny! The teachers were generous enough for you to ‘try some more’ for a little while.
After the class most people stuck around for a bit, we all chatted around the table and had a good laugh. It’s a shame the teacher and assistant just stuck with their mates and didn’t make the effort with the rest of the group- but I guess their ‘job’ was over and they wanted to just chill for a bit!
I haven’t converted to a whisky drinker- but at least I tried something new today AND didn’t spend any money!
