Whilst this is an experience I have always wanted to try- I cant help but feel a bit disappointed with it. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is purely touristic these days…
I ended up sitting in traffic for about 6.5 hours in total (totally normal in Bangkok)- and was squashed in the backseat. Some selfish girl in front of me decided to recline her seat- and because i was in the corner at the back I didn’t even have a floor.. The back tyre shapes the corner I was stuck in!! Not pleased!!! Obviously its a total #britishproblem that Im too polite to wake her up and ask her to sort it out!!
You have to wake up early to see this market- it isn’t nearby, and it happens in the morning. You have about 2 hours at the market- which actually is more than enough time!
Once you arrive you have to pay (again!) to get onto a boat. Some are paddle boats and some are powered boats. Ours was a very sweet lady who rowed us all the way!
It is a crazy experience, you basically stop other boats to buy food or souvenirs… only in Thailand!
I cant believe people run their business through these tiny fisherman boats! Its amazing to see! People in Asia are so innovative and entrepreneurial! With whatever little they have- they start their business and work hard to survive. They are always smiling!!
I bought a really cool lamp made of coconuts, which means I had to visit the post office and parcel this home! That was special!
I also had a coconut ice cream… If you’ve been reading a number of my Thailand posts, you may see that I have become somewhat of a fan of Coconut Ice cream in Thailand! If you can add toppings to your ice cream- I recommend Coconut Jelly and peanuts!
Once you reach the end of the stalls, we then were rowed back and we saw many of the houses and the way in which people livein this rural area. It was interesting to see- but when we met our guide he then put us on a long tailed boat and made us see it all again. Which was a time waste to be honest! When we got off the long tail boat- we thought the guide would give us some explanation or show us something exciting… But in fact we were just taken to the bus stop where we made our journey back.
Its a cool experience, but dampened by the traffic. Im happy Ive done it, but don’t worry if you miss this in your itinerary. It is basically a standard tourist market.. But the stalls are on boats.
