Atul Kocchar is one of the chefs I highly respect. His highly altruistic personality, his passion and the modern twists on vegetarian (and non veg) Indian dishes is truly remarkable. I love that you find parsnips and artichokes on this menu- which is unusual for Indian cuisine!
So for my birthday, I asked to go for dinner to Benares! It was delicious!
The bar is lovely, and I enjoyed a Cherry Kiss cocktail! So so good! The others went for the Mango and Date Lassi- very filling which is what you can expect from an Indian milkshake type drink.. But very delicious.
The starters were beautifully presented. We had the Subz Kebab Thal which is jerusalem artichoke and peppers stuffed with kidney beans, Malvani Paneer and parsnip shami.
We were toying with having a samosa or a chaat and the waitress Roxanne suggested a samosa chaat which wasn’t on the menu. This really is a 5* dish and I could’ve licked the plate clean!
We also had the Paneer Tiranga which is paneer cooked in 3 ways- the paneer bomb was my favourite piece here! The others were just average.
Daal Makhani was simply exquisite- I’m glad Chef Atul has not put any gimmicky changes to a classic flavour! Maybe a bit sweeter than I make it but accompanied well with my garlic naan!
The Paneer Tikka Masala needs to be on the menu full time- it was amazing and the paneer was flavoured and sized well and melt in the mouth.
The Haveli Kofta was good- the poppy seed sauce was a new flavour for me and I really enjoyed it.
The service was fantastic, our new waiter Alex was really good and funny, and Roxanne was knowledgable about the menu and Indian cuisine and made it a truly exceptional experience.
When I eat Indian food, I usually skip dessert- but given our setting it only seemed right to have dessert as well!
The Guanaja Truffle, Hazlenut Ice Cream was gorgeous, and I was presented with a complimentary dessert of mini eclairs with chocolate mousse and chai masala as a birthday treat from the restaurant! Literally finger licking good!
We also tried some sorbets- which were OK but we went all out and also had the dark chocolate mousse, passion fruit and hot chocolate sauce.
This final dish was mind blowing!! I would come back here and order 2! Delicious and really has the wow factor!
It’s pricey but its good! I loved Benares and I will be back again! I’m going to buy all the books!
This is a really good place for a celebration, date or even a place to wow some clients! Love love love!
