When you are told you are going to a toilet to eat on Valentine’s Day- you cannot help but be a little skeptical! We accidentally walked past the Attendant café because we were too busy nattering away.. But in my head I was thinking how this looks like a unique little café. I was delighted when my boyfriend turned me around and said oops- this is the place! The instagramming quickly began!
The Attendant venue is a former public toilet.. And the creative masterminds behind this café don’t let you forget this history of this venue in its appearance! (Except its very hygenic and not like a regular WC!)
You can sit with the tank above you, or next to the hand dryer.. and if you’re a little adventurous you can sit next to a urinal pod! (I think you have to see it to understand it!) I LOVE the quirky, originality of this café- and clearly so does the rest of London because the place was full and there was a long queue of patient guests waiting there turn.
Waiting in the queue is actually fun because you get to draw on the walls, read magazines and drink mint and lemon infused water. See what i did here?
The staff are extremely polite and clearly doing everything they can to get you seated and fed as soon as they can. We got our seats and although we were just perched on a bench we enjoyed taking pics of folks who were sat in a urinal looking type area! There was also a hand dryer and above near the ceiling was ‘old’ tank festering with flowers! The restaurant has those hideous tiles you find in public bathrooms- it was awesome!
There is a counter full of treats and bites for takeaway as well, but we had chosen to go stay in meal. For vegetarians there was 2 brunch options: 1. Smashed avocado with sourdough bread and truffle and 2. Banana bread with pistachio mascarpone cheese and raspberries. We decided to have 1 of each and share them, also got a poached egg on the side for the avocado toast.
The smashed avocado was lovely and well seasoned with lemon juice and the egg was perfectly poached. The sourdough was fantastically fresh and it was a lovely dish.
The banana bread dish is just gorgeous!!! My gosh we devoured it in about 2 minutes we only briefly stopped because we had finished all the mascarpone so the lovely staff gave us a cheeky extra spoonful for us! The banana bread was full of flavour and the mascarpone complimented it well. The raspberries and blackberries added that zing and the pistachios gave a crunch. A very well planned dish! It worked beautifully and I will be back for more!
The food at this place is so good, i’d enjoy it anywhere but I love that they’ve kept the story of this building alive- it is of course clean and new but they make it look old and in style with its history. Quirky fun- and a great place for a date!
